Rune II was originally an Epic Games Store-exclusive sequel to 2001’s Rune that was released into early access on November 12th, 2019, but developer Human Head Studios announced the studio’s demise the day after it launched and subsequently left the game a buggy, unfinished mess. That, along with the suspicious establishment of a new studio under Bethesda’s banner comprised of all of the same people, led the publisher to pursue litigation against Human Head Studios. A new development team called Studio 369 was also established to work Rune II into its “Decapitation Edition” finished state, and considering the circumstances, I have to say that they did a surprisingly good job. Calling this game unpolished would be an understatement (in many ways, it’s outright broken), but the story is filled with enough absurd turns to work as a semi-comedic adventure, and the mechanics blend several genres together into something enjoyably old-school. Rune II: Decapitation Edition took its lemons and made lemonade.
